4528 AD

‘AI-Bot9 checking in’ message flashed on the innumerable RAMS (Robot Activity Monitoring Screens) of Excavation Bay 3 at planet ExoHermes.

Three and half a century ago, the Earthlings had established a habitable colony for furthering their interests at ExoHermes. This mercury like metallic exoplanet was first detected in 2024 AD. It lay 350 light years from Earth near Virgo Constellation. Its grey dry surface had caught the fancy of mineral hungry Earthlings.

Distance was never a bother for rapacious sect aka Earthlings! Initial explorations into the deep space, closing in on ExoHermes has revealed its iron and silicate rich, open vast land. By 2200AD, the connect was made with the new-found planet by successfully launching ExoHermes itinerant. The itinerant has revealed the mineral rich secrets of ExoHermes, propelling the human missions to the planet.

Year 2250AD, saw the first greedy steps landing on ExoHermes. It however was met with a disastrous fate upon its landing there, leaving all ten astronauts on board, to martyrdom.

With unflinching determination to lay hands on the grey gold, the Earthlings continued their efforts and attempts. The 31st century ushered in the good news of first habitable colony on ExoHermes. However, ExoHermes was reserved only for mineral excavations. Earthlings had thankfully spared the planet by not establishing the human colony there.

Cut to present i.e. 4528AD, the planet was robbed off billions and trillions of tonnes of mineral, already. The system for space exporting of the mineral was stable by now. A special team of AI-Bots (Artificially Intelligent Robots) was deployed to survey the new territories and record the findings. AI-Bot9 was one of from the special team.

AI-Bot checking in was a regular routine. Captain Pallas was on duty, manning and managing the moment of AI-Bots when AI-Bot9 checked in. Captain Pallas’s keen eyes noticed a piece of paper in the clutches of AI-Bot9. Zooming the movement of the AI-Bot9, she made a quick decision.

‘AI-Bot9 to proceed to Quarantine Cove’ message was channelled to AI-Bot9 through high speed telepathic hot lines. Confirming that AI-Bot9 had changed the direction and was proceeding to the Quarantine Cove, Pallas fingered the code for teleportation on her wrist band. In no time, she was face to face with AI-Bot9, secured well behind protective laser shield at the Quarantine Cove.

After exchanging the pleasantries, Pallas directed AI-Bot9 to flash the piece of paper it was holding. Obeying to the instructions, AI-Bot9 flashed the card. In split of second, it was displayed on the laser screen in front of Pallas. She was surprised. It was a photo from a gone by era. She further instructed AI-Bot9 to log the latitude and longitudes of the place where it was found in the log dump for further investigations.

Picking up the photo, Pallas noted that it appeared as fresh as mint. Marveling whose palms these might be, she flipped it over. She read it aloud, in the state of enchantment..

“I will be right here waiting for you Rishi…. Love Rajvi”

Curious to find who were Rishi or Rajvi, Pallas turned to the archive of previous expeditions. Tears welled up when she saw the name of Captain Rishi from India as one of the brave hearts who had traveled to ExoHermes on the fateful first flight!

ExoHermes – Exoplanet Hermes. Hermes is the Greek God associated with speed and good luck. He was also the patron of travellers, writers, athletes, merchants, thieves and orators. ExoHermes, right now is a reality in my imagination!

Nice story as I am always in awe of sci-fi and futuristic stories. Liked the end …tragic for the lives lost and the loved ones left behind.

Ah! Those intrepid first ‘explorers’ are often taken for granted by later generations.
