“Please Mom, let me”, he pleaded.
“No means no”, she replied sternly.
“Only this time”, said he with a great sense of urge.
“Its never ending”
“Why no?”, he demanded to know.
“You are too young to join the hacking universathon*. You are yet to reach the eligible age mark for it”
“I’m few years shy of that. I have already crossed that mark in Venusian years. Wont we live on Venus?”
“We do. Let me remind you, you being, earthling, a descendant of human race, you are governed by the laws at Earth”
“That’s not fair”
“Whatever. Right now, I want you to check into your sleep pod”, she instructed pointing to his room in their Venusian dome at Ishtar Terra**. “If I’m right, the center for hacking universathon is at Aphrodite Terra** which is mostly a restricted zone for inter-galactic activities, a high security area. And its almost three thousand kilometers journey”
“I have saved enough points from my obligatory social service routine, to buy me a round trip to it via teleporting junctions”, he pleaded.
She did not respond. Instead, extended her arm and pointed in the direction of his room.
He was dejected. She could read it very well from the magnetic vibrations emanating from his brain.
“I am programming your sleep pod for giving you a head and body massage. It will soothe your dejection”, she informed him. That made him turn back while on his way to the sleep-pod.
‘She knows me inside out’, he reflected to self.
“I can and must”, she replied, reading his mind again. “For I am your mother”, she continued.
He smiled and rushed to give her a hug. She was little surprised by that move. Before she could react to this outburst of emotion, he turned around and was on his way.
‘The boy is growing fast, yet remains the same little kiddo he was when I adopted him from Earth’, she recorded.
This scene from last night played back in her memory as she was checking the terminals for monitoring the growth of saplings in the green-yard, as a routine. She was an agrarian scientist working on genetically modified wheat to be grown on Venusian lands. She had noticed some marks on the terra-firma. Pausing the footage and enlarging the screen, she was surprised with the discovery. Fresh foot prints were enough to catch her fancy.
“The boy is at it again”, she mumbled to self. Next thing that she checked was the security locking system at the dome entrance. There were three entrances to their dome. The main on the Eastern side, a smaller one towards the end of the green-yard on the western side and a garage opening on the Northern side. None had recorded any breach.
“Time now for me to check the cloud data from Earth for downloading the ‘teen-control’ module from Human-growth-model. Its getting difficult to decipher his actions, emotions now a day”, she reflected as she felt incapable of handling teen-upbringing phase.
‘I am aging. Slowly advancing on the path of redundancy. Time inching fast for me to report at the e-waste port’, she contemplated as she checked his sleep pod’s data. The data informed her that the pod had been vacant for good three hours.
‘How did he escape without security system noticing him? There’s no trace of dome gate security breach either’, she questioned herself.
While she was lost in raking up the memory, he hugged her from behind.
‘Mom don’t trouble yourself. I can read your face though not your mind. I love hacking and simply hacked into the dome security algorithm’, he said with a naughty grin.
“I see you now. But, why could I not trace your escape on cameras?”, she inquired.
“That’s simple. I have used the anti-thermal-imaging suit with invisibility mode for day-light activity. I found a beta version of invisibility mode from your private module on our dome’s central cloud. Its working perfectly, Mom. I already have a solid matter permeability cloak with me, one that you had gifted me on birthday, few years back. Used the suit and the cloak in sync mode to transport me from this side of wall to other”, he said, clearing the doubt with great enthusiasm.
“I badly need an upgrade”, she rumbled, “Bringing up a teen in advanced-space age is easier said than done. No wonder human race is far wiser than likes of AI*** Mom-bots like me”, she chuckled as he joined the laughter too!
