He was laying the table for the dinner when she heard a long sigh.

“Table for only two…”

That was true, because Mr Balanced was out on a tour (nothing new, isnt it?). Grandmother had taken the Innocent Baby, along with her to native. They were to spend holidays at country side.

Fetching the hot pot from the kitchen, she checked his expressions. Dropped shoulders, dejected eyes had a lot to share.

‘He had been studying for long time and now a days for longer hours. The exams are really nerve wrecking exercise’, she thought to herself. “I must perk him up”, she decided.

After offering the prayers, both started breaking the bread. Mrs Chitterchatter asked, “How did your team do today?” Without looking up from his plate, he  answered, “We won 4-1”. Let me inform you that the chap reserves an hour & half for playing the game of football, every evening. “That’s something”, replied Mrs Chitterchatter animatedly.

However, it did not spark him up. She was surprised. She was not the one to give up.

“Want to watch movie tonight?”, she checked with him. The boy is a movie buff; has taken it from both his parents!

“No fun in watching”, he stated coldly.

“Why so?”, she asked with curiosity.

“As if you don’t know”, he replied looking straight into her eyes.

That startled her. However, she really was clueless.

“Please enlighten”, she requested.

“No one to fight with over the remote, for the choice of channel”, he replied, sounding lonesome. “When we fight for the trifle things, the victory is worth fighting for!”, he continued.

“Hahahaha…. You are missing the Innocent Baby, aren’t you?”, she tested him.

“Ya…in a sense. Because she is not there, I don’t get much needed ‘time-pass’ breaks. There is no one to provoke around. It’s so much fun to play on her ignorance! You can’t fathom the joy of winning the fight, especially when I know I am going to win it”, he added nostalgically.

“Don’t you now have the freedom to set the AC as per your choice and set the bedroom as per your likes?”, she highlighted the positives of not having her around.

“It doesn’t please me that much. I now have to water the plants alone, lay the table for  dinner. Haggling over the tasks for tidying up the room is such a fun. She fetches me water and sharpens my pencils. She keeps my books inside the cupboard and tidies my study table. Dearly missing it!”, he cited honestly.

Mrs Chitterchatter was taken by surprise with the revelation. Giant Little Kid and Innocent Baby were at loggerheads most of the times. They were like the war lords of opposing tribes. Brokering the truce between them was a tiresome task which she was struggling to master.

Wish I had camera to capture the blissful and content of face of Mrs Chitterchatter! Want to know Mr Balanced’s reaction on hearing this one? Well he feigned fainting…

I can really connect with this. My niece and I are mostly fighting over the tv remote or the show we will watch. It may sound sadistic but outsmarting kids amuses me often.

    Anagha Yatin · April 4, 2018 at 9:13 pm

Do you also have the broken remote at your house Arjun? Thanks for visiting and sharing your story.

Brothers and sisters. You know the Marathi saying don’t you about ‘tujha shivay karmena…….’

    Anagha Yatin · April 4, 2018 at 9:36 pm

Chapkhal! This proverb folds and unfolds everyday at most of the households and mine is one of them too. So is Nutty family’s! Thank you Sunita for visiting.

Shilpa Garg · April 4, 2018 at 4:28 pm

Aww! That’s so sweet. Siblings fight and argue with each other every now and then but at the end of the day they can’t live without each other. Like they say, siblings fight hard, but they love even harder.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? I remember always being at loggerheads with my sister, but when she got married the house completely went silent.

Jyotirmoy Sarkar · April 4, 2018 at 8:32 pm

I have siblings too..and love the bond , daily fights but daily calling and asking the well being…you are keeping me hooked here

Varsha Kalelkar · April 5, 2018 at 4:08 pm

It’s time away from each other that teaches us the value of a person in our life. Well siblings’s love for fight should be just called as love.

Thank you for bringing back the memories.

Ramya Abhinand · April 5, 2018 at 4:28 pm

This surely touches the heart and soul of one and all.. Memories rekindled, I was in a similar situation during up my growing up years.
