The phone rang again. Elaine couldn’t ignore it as it was the fourth time in succession that someone was trying to reach her. “I told you I am busy”, she said scornfully to the instrument, as she glanced at the caller id screen.

“Has to be him”, she uttered when she saw Nicholas’s name flashing.

“Lainie, you never pick up my phone”, said the grumpy voice on the other side.

“You always call up at wrong time”, replied Elaine with much disdain.

“As if, the world would crumble if you had picked up the phone leaving your so important task on hand”

“Want any demo?”

“Lets schedule that show some other day! Hahahaha”

“Is that what you wanted to convey me with lightening emergency?”

“Awww… almost forgot that in thick of our World War. Which number is the current one, Lainie?”

“Disconnecting”

“No, no, no…listen, honey, don’t do that”

“All ears”

“I forgot to carry an important envelope with me. If you can find it and keep it handy? I am ten minutes’ drive from home now. Will pick it up and go ahead”

“Find where?”

“How I wish you ever allowed to expand my business beyond the boundaries of my office?”

“Office? Then a big, bold no.”

“Why such an apathy for the bread and butter winner?”

“It’s is none less than a thick mysterious enchanted forest”, she said as she shrugged off the thought of climbing the stairs and stepping inside the office that he had set at attic. Nick’s so-called office was the classic example of how the office shouldn’t be! Elaine always wondered as to how Nick could work from that place let alone find anything from the mess. Thankfully, she could say that it was none of her business!

“As if some bear is going to pounce on you and tickle you crazy, the moment you step inside it, huh?”, he said bursting in a loud laughter. “Lainie, sweetheart, honey, darling… please!”, he tried to woo her.

“Ok, ok, ok. No more drama. But I won’t guarantee that I would be able to locate it”, she asserted to set the things right for record.

“Sure, you will. For you are a great expert at finding faults that I often fail to notice and this one is a big envelope”, he sniggered.

There was a deafening silence at the other end. Nick could imagine Laine charging up to him as the raging bull. Before he could say something to douse the fire, the line was cut. Elaine stood huffing and puffing. Whistle from the cooker got her back to normal and she rushed to the kitchen.

“Non-cooperation movement…till the unparliamentary remarks are apologised for”, she declared to herself. Like most of us, Elaine is as firm as rock when it comes to resolves for fighting the home-grown battles!

Finishing the chores in the kitchen, she was about to reach for the newspaper and settle for a quite read. She witnessed some movement from corner of her eyes. Fearing some burglar might have creeped in, she stepped back. She reached for the knife and tip toed towards the living room.

“Happy Anniversary”, came a loud voice and a big heart shaped balloon went floating across her face. She was petrified by it and stood like a statute.

“Happy anniversary” he whispered in her ears getting intimate. Her heart beat skipped. But she knew it was him. The assuring embrace soothed her stressed nerves. Blush had a riot across her face as he planted a gentle kiss on her forehead.

It was none other than Nick who had slipped inside the house using his set of keys! He had called up Elaine only to ensure that she was at home and had not ventured out. He wished to throw a happy surprise for her who had thought that he had forgotten their anniversary!

With knife still in her hand, Elaine was speechless at this gesture.

“Hope that knife is for the cake and not for me”, said Nick winking.

“Naughty boy. You will never grow up”, said Elaine blushing.

“How will I? You look the same pretty, young Lainie that I had met thirty years back!”, cooed Nick.

Time now for us too, to leave the couple enjoying the bliss of togetherness, and get back to our business…

Lovely story…the surprise element was nicely tucked in. The arguments and counter arguments sets the scene deftly it and the dialogue are well composed. In such short stories, the pace is very important and we don’t have much room to narrate and maneuver and you done with perfect measure.

The hope and happiness every love story has is what the world needs badly. Theres too much hatred and envy all around. Another 30 years is what I hope.
