Jimmil is a curious boy of three. He regards himself as grown-up. Though most of the family members disregard his self-declared-status, he doesn’t care much. He believes that grownups always have ‘differences of opinion’.

He has a buddy, Albert. There’s a slight gap in their ages though. About sixty years or so. Albert happens to be his grandpa, if you haven’t guessed it.

According to Jimmil, its Albert and he who usually are busy in similar business of figuring what to do with the long hours of the day. While Jimmil spends an hour in the morning at the play school, Albert gets busy for that very hour jogging at the park. Most important, Albert treated him as an equal which gave Jimmil freedom to call his buddy by his first name!

That day while watching TV together, Jimmil had a question. He has plenty, always. That’s his everyday business. Answering them is Albert’s!

“Why is he frowning?”, asked Jimmil pointing to the screen, at a man with knitted eyebrows and delivering a speech.

“He is explaining an important question that his country is facing which others need to understand”, replied Albert.

“Just like me!”, came the instant reply.

“How?”

“I always have important questions and no one in the house understands”

“Like?”

“Like, Mom tells me I’m small to decide on my lunch portion but reminds me that I am big when it comes to tiding up my room. So, am I small or a grown-up?”

“That’s a debatable question. Let’s have it for discussion over dinner tonight”

“Thanks, Albert, for considering. Don’t you have any important question as well that we need to discuss?”

Pondering momentarily, Albert replied, “I do”

“What’s that?”

“Why has hair stopped emerging from glabrous patch on my head?”, grudged Albert.

“I see. Feel everyone has an important question that needs to be discussed”, stated Jimmil.

“Maybe”

“How will I know?”

“Check it up”, suggested Albert.

“Thanks buddy”, replied Jimmil with gratitude, dashing out of the living room. He found grandma the performing pooja and offering her prayers to God.

“Do you have any important question in life that needs to be discussed at dinner, Granny?”

Not happy with the distraction, Granny nodded affirmatively.

“What’s it?”, checked Jimmil.

“Why do Albert and Jimmil always feel hungry?”

“It never occurred to me Granny! Thanks for your contribution”, said Jimmil. When he was lost figuring out the possible reasons, Lucy the house help crossed his path.

“Do you also have an important question in life Lucy? Albert has, Granny has and I have one too”

With a chuckle, Lucy replied, “Me too”

“What’s that?”

“Why does the house turn dirtier within twenty-four hours of me cleaning it?”

“You clean it and we mess it, is it so?”

“You can discuss that at dinner, Jimmil” she replied with a chuckle.

This got Jimmil started. He is on his way out to know it from one and all.

You might be next.

So, be ready with a question ‘what’s the important question in your life?’

I do have a question for jimmil to discuss. Why does a sink get dirty dishes within half hour of clearing it?

jaya1966 · April 10, 2020 at 5:35 pm

Wonderful story. Reminds me of the kind of innocent questions my daughter used to ask me when she was in grade 1. She is now in grade 9 and I really miss those questions.

Hahaha lovely piece of read… Yes, I too have one important question to be discussed over dinner… What should I cook next so that I can make optimum use of the rationed groceries currently at home and with no complaints on taste :))

CRD · April 10, 2020 at 9:56 pm

The question I have is why am I still stuck on letter F while everyone else is on I? :p

Shreyas Joshi · April 10, 2020 at 10:05 pm

‘A slight age gap of about 40 years’…I laughed myself crazy over this. A very cheerful read with immense literary prowess is what leads to the most adorable sweet little stories, which someday will be join the collection of grandma’s sack of happy stories! My important question on a lighter note is…Is it necessary to have a question or can I just let my elders handle the mess while I enjoy life’s sweet and tangy lemons? Do let me know if Jimmil discusses this over dinner and is able to arrive at a solution!! Eagerly awaiting the stories to come!

Keith's Ramblings · April 10, 2020 at 10:23 pm

What a great relationship they have! I often wonder why the things I enjoy most are bad for me, and things that are good for me are uninteresting!

I is for …

Aruna Palkar · April 10, 2020 at 10:38 pm

Hi Angha In life we have to face many tricky questions answers are different for each family. Everyone want answer what is suitable for him or cover his ego and each person think his question is valid and important. Need to explain ageing and maturity are different when you matured enough we feel you are grownup and answer to granny if you starts surve food tasteless they were not feel hungry son and all hunger of teasty food and you also prepare food for happiness in surving tasty food. 😋

Namratha Varadharajan · April 11, 2020 at 1:48 am

That was super funny!

My current important question is why do words pop out while talking but stall while writing?

Might change tomorrow.

Shilpa Garg · April 11, 2020 at 9:26 am

Hahaha! Cute story! I have a question or two for Jimmil and that needs discussion and answers too… ‘Where are my days flying? Why are we forever talking and planning about the next meal? 😀

Sonal Gawande · April 11, 2020 at 2:18 pm

It made me smile ..very well written

bloggeray · April 12, 2020 at 12:36 am

This is funny. Jimmil seems to be taking on the responsibilities of the world quite early in his life. 🙂

alpanadeo · April 12, 2020 at 1:45 am

haha..thats a cute one Anagha. I was picturing my 3.5 year old and smiling throughout the story. These day he comes to me and says, “Aai, ek idea aahe.” and his ideas never ends..:) If I get to meet Jimmil some da then one would like to give him a tight hug and then ask my question- whats his source of energy and if I can borrow a littlest of his cuteness and innocence..

Dr. Surbhi Prapanna · April 12, 2020 at 2:23 am

Such a beautiful relationship between grandpa and grand son ..and I agree sometimes we say our kids “You are grown up now..” and in next moment, “Abhi tum chote ho..” ..excellent write up and you set an amazing plot by describing all characters and circumstances so beautifully.

Pradeep · April 12, 2020 at 7:43 pm

Here is my question for Jimmil: “Why there are more things to be done in a day than it’s possible?”

TheDreamGirlWrites · April 14, 2020 at 12:26 am

Three year olds are adorable.
That question never really goes away does it?
For our parents we will always be too young for somethings but old enough to take care of something else!
