“I promise you. I will gift you 16 of them one day”, he requested earnestly, as he could witness the roaring fire in her otherwise calm black eyes, which was not only burning her inside out but roasting him too; to douse the outburst.
“Sixteen in a day? When you can’t make it in time for one? Yesterday’s spirit still high on you, eh?”, said she in one breath, with her voice cracking under the weight of anger and frustration that loomed heavily in her heart.
“Never settle for less”, said Yash calmly and with determination.
“As if it’s going to come true on Earth, in this lifetime”, replied Yamini with disdain as a tear dared escape her welled up eyes.
“Wait for another 16 years from now”, he asserted with poise, making her marvel at his firm disposition while bitterness was about to seize control of her speech.
“I can’t think nor see that far”, she mumbled turning her back to him.
“I promise you. We will witness 16 in one day, together…what if we missed one today?”, he consoled.
“Don’t entertain me with a bad joke”, she chastised.
“Mark my words. For now, I am sorry”, he said walking up to her and pulling her in his warm embrace.
“…”, she had a long sigh as she melted in his warmth.
It had so happened that they were celebrating the 1st wedding anniversary in Wyoming where one can witness the best ever Sunrise from the pristine glacial Jackson Lake at the feet of mystic Teton mountains.
She was an early riser and he an owl; she a teetotaler and he loved his spirit; she a die-hard romantic and he the most practical. The result… they had missed the opportunity to witness the magical sunrise, courtesy of a late-night party before. Sunrise according to her always had the signature touch of assurance and blessings. He, however, had failed to get up, did not make it in time to witness the spectacle, thus ruining the anniversary celebration.
This scene played back in her mind, when they witnessed the 16th and the last sunrise of the day, as part of their space vacation package onboard the International Space Station, commemorating their 16th wedding anniversary, with he sitting next to her holding her hands.
For all these years, he had saved enough to take her to space and compensate for his blooper of waking up late and spoiling the 1st-anniversary celebration as envisaged by her.
“Never settle for less”, said Yash again, his eyes gleaming with joy, extending his arms inviting Yamini to feel the same warmth and love on which the Sun has never set.
