“I won’t be coming tomorrow”, announced the cook before leaving the house.

An eerie silence enveloped the house. The week end had just started off with a surprise blow.

“I have a conference call to attend”, discovered Mr Balanced as he wished to avoid all melodrama that would follow post this ominous announcement.

“I am starting off with my practice paper”, declared the Giant Little Kid

But everyone was in for a surprise!

“Ok. But don’t extend your leave”, replied Mrs Chitterchatter to the cook.

“Did you hear what the cook said?”, cross checked the Innocent Baby.

“Yes”

“Still you are ok with it?”, checked the elder one.

“Why should I not be?”, countered Mrs Chitterchatter spiritedly.

“What’s cooking?”, asked Mr Balanced cautiously.

“You mean in kitchen or in her mind?”, asked Innocent Baby turning to her father.

A pall of gloom fell on the men of the house and they were about to return back to their urgent discoveries.

Another shocker awaited them. Mrs Chitterchatter replied with glee, “Lots cooking at both”

“Tomorrow we will have instant noodles for breakfast”, she continued.

“Yeah…my favourite”, added Giant Little Kid.

“And our visit to the burger joint is long due”, she said turning to the Innocent Baby

“So, a burger lunch for all?”, cross checked the Innocent Baby to be sure.

“Yes!”, replied mommy animatedly.

“And what about dinner?” Mr Balanced raised the doubt.

“We have to attend a naming ceremony”, came a victorious reply from Mrs Chitterchatter.

“That’s going to be heavy on tummy”, complained Mr Balanced. “Let’s have oats for breakfast”, he continued. But it was met with a giant protest.

“How about home-made pan cakes for lunch”, Mr Balanced suggested. He had to withdraw this suggestion at the hint of the cloud burst from the Innocent Baby’s corner.

“I hope we won’t repent”, he stated.

“Don’t you worry”, came the assurance from Mrs Chitterchatter.

Next day went well as planned.

“See I told you”, reminded Mrs Chitterchatter to Mr Balanced.

When half the world was asleep that night, Mrs Chitterchatter got up. The rumblings in her stomach made her toss and turn in the bed. As if the lightening had struck, she sprang from the bed and dashed towards the washroom. Emerging out after a noisy affair inside, she returned to comforts of the bed. In another fifteen minutes the entire episode was played back! Another ten minutes and there was a re-telecast of it!

This time she emerged as the wounded soldier and barely could reach the bed. She barely managed to get up Mr Balanced. He was startled to begin with but got the hang of the situation. He gave her a glass of ORS. However, the repeat telecast continued for her till early hours of morning. Kids were greeted by their father in the morning. They were surprised too at this!

“What’s the matter Daddy?”, asked Giant Little Kid

“Nothing much. Your mom just got the pangs of repentance”, replied Mr Balanced calmly.

I loved the story until Mrs Chitter Chatter had to suffer. Not fair. She was on a roll – don’t make her suffer.

    Anagha Yatin · April 18, 2018 at 9:48 am

Hehehe…thanks Kalpana for the inputs. It could well have ended on another note had she not suffered…brownie point over Mr Balanced.
    Thanks dear for visiting.

True that Akshata! Sometimes some lessons are best learnt out of repentance.

Some pangs of repentance are worth the short joy of the delicious food. Not this one though, this is too much
