Chandar was ecstatic and anxious in equal measures as he paced nervously in the lobby in front of the labour room.

“Congratulations Mr Chandar. You are a father of a baby boy”, said the nurse emerging out of the labour room and handing over the little bundle of joy to him.

“How is Tara?”, he enquired as he took the baby in his arms.

“She is fine. We will bring her in the room in another hour”, replied nurse.

Chandar was over the moon. He went to the assigned room following the nurse who held the baby.

“Please press the bell next to the bed, in case you need any help with the baby till we get the baby’s mother here”, advised the nurse as she was about to leave the room after settling the baby in Chandar’s lap who was by now sitting on the bed.

Moving his fingers gently over the baby wrapped snuggly in the baby blanket, he ws lost in soaking the feelings of being a father. The baby slept peacefully, all this while.

Knock on the door, followed by the sound of the wheelchair,  made him aware of Tara’s entry into the room. With the help of the nurse, Tara lied down on the other bed in the room.

“You can keep the baby in the cradle next to the bed”, suggested the nurse and helped Chandar with the task.

“I am happy but exhausted, Chandar”, said Tara holding his hand as he sat near her.

“Congratulations Tara. You have been promoted to a new position. You are a mother now. We are a new set of parents!”, exclaimed Chandar not hiding his excitement, as he patted on Tara’s head. “Thank you for this gift”, he continued.

“I have a doubt Chandar”

“What?”

“Will the baby be able to see?”, she asked sceptically.

“Que sera, sera, Tara. Time now is to enjoy the moment. Forget everything else. Time will unfold the secret. Don’t you worry though” he said reaching out to her hands and holding them close to his heart.

“Que sera, sera” repeated Tara in rhythm with Chandar’s heartbeat, as she dropped the doubt and decided to bask in the glory of the moment.

Tara and Chandar turned one happy couple with lots of dreams in their visionless eyes for their newborn!

Que sera sera, whatever will be, will be! It’s best to be in the moment and make the most of it!
A beautiful story, Anagha!

Your story reminded me of one of my senior di in school. Her parents were blind, both. But di was not like them. And uncle and aunty had numerous colourful dreams for their only daughter. A heart touching story Anagha.

You write well, beta. We should live in the moment. Most people worry about the future or live in the past. And miss out what is at present.

alpanadeo · April 20, 2020 at 5:16 pm

There are any couple like Chandar and Tara who are living their lives happily with each other’s support. That question was quite obvious. But as Chandar said..enjoy the moment.

Dr. Jyoti Arora · April 20, 2020 at 5:27 pm

This is so strange. When my younger one was to be born there were several ifs and buts about her health. And many suggestions about not going ahead with the baby. My husband had the exact words to tell me…Que sera sera..She was born a healthy baby.

purbajune · April 20, 2020 at 5:55 pm

This is such a beautiful story Anagha..though anxiety of tara is normal and obvious. as a parent, when we have a lacking or disability, we had a fear that it might get into our kids…but having a positive outlook and enjoy the present moment is equally important, you had expressed this emotion so beautifully in this story.

Ajay Mago 'Haazir' · April 21, 2020 at 3:44 am

Very nice story. Reminded me of bollywood movies Khamoshi and Koshish.

Ira Mishra · April 21, 2020 at 4:10 am

Wow another beautiful narrative… And I loved the motto of life to take life as it comes and savour each moment….somehow only people who have faced difficulties in life seem to realise and follow this motto in life!!

msjadeli · April 21, 2020 at 6:08 am

You have me crying on this one. Such a beautiful story <3

Nisha · April 21, 2020 at 12:24 pm

Beautifully penned. I always feel parents with physical disabilities are brave to have children. It is the hardest thing to get over your own short-comings and bring another life into this world..

Unishta · April 22, 2020 at 10:01 am

I do hope the baby can see. I know of a set of disabled parents who have the most wonderful children who are completely and fully able bodied.

Aanandika · April 26, 2020 at 12:47 am

Beautiful. Very moving but yes que sera sera. Always. Live , breathe and smile.
