There are ways to keep oneself happy. Some engage in hobbies or learning new skills or shopping or watching daily soaps or gossiping or cribbing about their better half / kids / MIL or giving free advice etc. I believe the list will have as many number of ways as human population on this Earth. Doubt that? No one is stopping you from conducting the survey across the globe!

And then there is Mrs Chitterchatter…

Recently I learnt about her secret to happiness. Actually, I shouldn’t be revealing it. I have promised her not to share it with anybody. Its between you and me only! You got it, right?

Come morning and she anxiously awaits one sound. Not that of the doorbell or the chirping of the birds. Then? That of news paper landing at her doorsteps. Though juggling frogs in kitchen, she has one ear to the main door. Her dose of happiness starts at the “thud” sound of the newspaper landing at the door.

Now a day, the newspaper is all but negativity. She agrees that. However, beneath the heap of the negativity lies her sparkling gem…

First smile line of the day is brought to her face via ”Daily horoscope”. The short and sweet 3/4 sentences that are printed next to her star sign are enough for boosting her spirits  Sometimes, when the lines do not convey her the right message, she then reads what’s in store for other signs. The one that resonates with her the best, is then chosen by her as her star sign for the day! She believes in keeping things simple, you see! Happy she ensures the happy day ahead for her.

But that’s only about the daily dose.

Come Sunday and she is all the more eager to read what lies ahead in the week. The weekly predictions are meditative for her. Not because it is for the entire week but because there is almost a paragraph to read. This means little longer time to read and be happy about. Sometimes the googlies of the retrograde and direct motions of the planets make her dizzy while reading. Some planet looking angrily at other or some joining the hands for a nefarious plot entertain her, as if watching some galactic, space-age movie!

She believes that ignoring the trouble makers is the wisest way. She follows it to a T and ignores all those stars and planets that fail to walk in straight line and don’t follow the celestial etiquette of keeping up to themselves!

Marching through the entire week is then done in the most elated way.

Entire world is delighted to welcome the 1st of every month; it’s a pay day after all. Mrs Chitterchatter, however is delighted because it’s the time for the Tarot reading for the month! Mention of the cups, the pentacles, the swords and the wands from the Tarot cards transport her to the fantasy land. Taro predictions are nothing but reading the story from far off land and getting lost in the fairy world.

One fine day, I met her in the evening and quizzed her about her day. I wanted to check whether it was it as per the predictions?

As if searching something in the labyrinth of her memory, Mrs Chitterchatter rolled her eyes and responded, “I think yes. Its been a happy day…hmmmm week and yes, month as well. Truth is, I don’t usually remember what I read in daily predictions”. Continuing after a pause to spill the bean, she said, “I don’t recollect what was there in the weekly one and I suppose same is the case of monthly one either”.

It was the most unexpected yorker delivery and I was clean bowled.

She was not over yet. “I think, this is how it is… always, all through out the year. I don’t recollect what I read in the horoscope by end of the day or for that matter half way through the day. All I remember is, days dawn to make us happy or we have to make them happy

“Why do you read the horoscope religiously then?”, I countered.

“I love reading ‘tomorrow’ for rosy ‘today’. Try it for yourself”, she replied with much glee.

Special thanks to Ms Mayuri Nidigallu for helping me arrive at the title for post. She is a fine human being who blogs at sirimiri.in She is an accomplished Tarot card reader too!  Dont forget to check out Tarot readings by her here

She’s just like my husband. He diligently reads his horoscope every single day, even egging me on to read it for him sometimes. Doesn’t remember a word of it within next few minutes! But yes, he says its a feel-good thing. 🙂

    Anagha Yatin · April 21, 2018 at 7:04 pm

Hahaha…but I am sure the happiness lingers longer for him too! Thanks Varsh for sharing this snippet.

What a great hobby. I used to do the same a few years ago. I was so much into it at one point of time that I actually thought it all came true. But, it didn’t. Gradually, I realized the truth and stayed away from it. And, now I don’t even glance at it. Also, like Mrs. Chitterchatter, I used to await the morning newspaper, but nowadays it’s been days together since I open one. All the negative news pulls me down and I don’t want that. I just read the Mumbai mirror for some time pass and gossip. 😉 However, I remember my mother had a tarrot cared reader friend who had predicted something about me which actually came true. And I am happy that it came true. 🙂

I remember reading those horoscopes, but I have always been a cynic about them I’m afraid!

I too have this habit that even though i do know most of it is relative i read them to just connect it during the day if something like that actually transpires. haha.. sometimes so naive I feel.. but if it keeps us happy what better than it

I also enjoy reading about the future. But believe me the first thing I read in the papers is the obituaries. Somehow reading those make me focus on today.

    Anagha Yatin · April 21, 2018 at 6:26 pm

Is it? Really? On second thoughts, I think thats the best way to stay present in today.
    Thanks Sunita for sharing this.

I used to read horoscopes and Tarot until something happened which made me dislike it. But I like the positivity you derive from everything.
