Fiona stood at the threshold till Stanley, her better half and Ethan, her son disappeared behind the elevator doors.  Turning around, she closed the door of her apartment. The parting smile of the day lingered on her face for a while.

The few steps towards the dining table, it vanished. Morning mess was waiting for her at the dining table, strewn here and there. The day’s newspaper, empty milk glasses, half eaten apple and what not were waiting for her to rescue them. The day had started off on a usual note of hurry-bury and she knew the rest will go ahead just as yesterday, day before and so on!

“Seasons change but not my routine”, thought she as her hands got busy in winding up. A gust of wind from the window brushed her curly locks back. It had the hint of the moistness. She looked up. A crowd of dark cloud extending beyond the frame of the window beckoned her. The dark bodies had the magnetic effect on her and thus was pulled towards the window. The cool breeze and the overcast skies triggered her time travel.

The drench and dripping souls, shivering and standing under the shed of an abandoned half-built hut on way to Lonavala stood in front of her eyes. It was their first date and the rain wished to be the witness of their blooming romance!

“Those were the days”, reflected Fiona. “I miss them so much” she continued to be lost in her thoughts while gazing out. It started drizzling soon. She was pleasantly woken up from the dreamy state by the splashing of the rain drops courtesy naughty winds! She smiled again and herd a chirp inside… “Why miss when we can recreate the magic again?” Sunny thoughts created a rainbow in her heart and she made up a plan.

Next day, though it was a week end, there was not a single thread of laziness in her actions. The overcast skies were in full steam and had not stopped sending the army of rain drops. Stanley and Ethan registered the change in Fiona’s disposition but couldn’t fathom the reason. They left it that and went ahead with their business as usual. Ethan left for the morning turf date with his football team mates.

Serving the sunny side up omelette to Stanley, Fiona joined him for the breakfast.

“You’d never believe me if I told you that I have a magical umbrella, but it’s true and I can prove it”, she said trying hard to rein in her excitement.

Stanley could not discern if it was some kind of joke or Fiona was really out of her mind. Ignoring his reaction, she continued.

“The day I step out with it, it never rains. The day I forget to take it along, rains show up. The end result is same, I curse rains in both cases”, she continued.

Stanley laughed at the thought of Fiona picking up bones with the rains! He grew curious not because of her fancy, puerile thought. It was Fiona’s innocent charm that attracted him this time.

“I can prove it. Join me today for my weekly vegetable market drive. I will carry my magical talisman, my umbrella. I bet it wont rain”, she invited Stanley with a hint of urge.

Pausing a moment before responding, Stanley nodded in affirmation. ‘I haven’t been to the market since ages and there isn’t much on the work front that needs my attention on priority’, he had mused before giving the consent.

Stanley’s affirmation gifted spring to Fiona’s feet. In no time they were spotted on way to vegetable market. The umbrella joined them to check out its magical strength!

The drizzle had stopped by then. Stanley was surprised. Holding his hands, Fiona was negotiating the puddles on the road. Warmth of her grip and cheer in her spirit rubbed on to him. He started humming his favourite song much to the delight of Fiona. Half way through, the rains defied the magic. It couldn’t hold on to the drops waiting impatiently to check out the warmth of love growing between the two.

Stanley ran for the covers. Fiona stood where she was not moving even a bit. Stanley waived at her and then called her out to catch her attention. Fiona had stretched her arms to welcome the droplets with her eyes closed. A few moments into her bliss, she felt the cover over her and a sinewy push. As she opened her eyes, she saw Stanley holding umbrella over head with one hand and clutching her near him with other. The pair of eyes met and the gaze was locked. The spark of the romance froze the moment for both of them.

And then? then what??? The umbrella was happy that its magical power was proved wrong. Stanley discovered that Fiona was still the same young girl he once dated. What about Fiona????… she was delighted at reviving the magic that seemed to have never lost between them!
