‘Six months into 2019 and I cant wait anymore’, he mumbled. That day he was very busy since morning, busy cleaning and polishing the brand new bicycle.
She was returning home, after a long while and much longer wait. He had promised her a bicycle. She always dreamt of riding to the work on one. He knew her wish in detail. A black beauty with a cane basket and a front night lamp was what she had indicated, thousands of times whenever there was a mention of it.
After trying the placement of the bicycle, this way and that, at the front of house for 11th time, he gave up, saying, “Will I ever get the best angle to place it?”
He had bought it after saving every other penny over the last six months while she was away.
He heard the pulse wail of the ambulance nearing the lane of their house. He got up at once, rushing inside one last time. Emerging out, he stood in attention with his hands back, near the entrance wearing a broad smile.
The ambulance stopped and the attendants helped her out. Tears of joy descended on her rosy cheeks as she spotted him waiting.
He ran towards her and gave her a warm embrace. Few moments passed by without a word being uttered. The silence played the welcome song in the company of two beating hearts.
Loosening her grip, he stepped back, and held a close fist in front of her. Puzzled that she was, he nudged her to open his fist. She followed it and was surprised. There was a key with her name on the key chain. As she looked up, he had moved a bit, to left side and behind him stood a bicycle waiting for its rightful owner to ride it.
“How can I?”, she questioned with her voice chocking.
“You will, one day… I have started saving for it”, he assured her with confidence.
Pushing her wheelchair towards the wheels of hope, the bicycle, he said,” Natural or prosthetic, legs can push the paddle. Are you ready?”
She, a janitor at hospital, had lost her legs when the bridge that she was walking on, to return home from her night shift, had caved in under the weight of apathy of the civic officials.
Six months into 2019 and that day she had returned home after several months of hospitalization to put the shattered pieces of body and spirit together.
