3050AD

He got up from Anya’s side, as she lay lifeless, with efforts. His eyes as blank as marble.

The reed diffuser failed to suppress the smothered smell of dolefulness.

He trudged towards bedroom as if some streak of thought pulled him, compulsion that he must oblige.

“Dad, stay back please”, Maitreyi whimpered from other side of Anya.

He stopped momentarily, nodded but continued ahead. As he receded from her view, Maitreyi heard the cupboard open.

While lost in her thoughts, there was a nudge on her shoulder. He stood near, holding a plain green silk saree. Maitreyi was puzzled.

“Your Mom, my Anya, wanted me to buy a saree before our engagement, 60 years from now. She was testing my memory, whether I have registered her choices well.”

Maitreyi remained nonplussed.

“Now its Anya’s final journey. I want her to know that she will forever be special part of my memory, forever”, he said in middle-of-the-road tone while keeping saree near Anya’s mortal remains.

He was a humanoid who had married Anya after World Governing Council legalized ‘Humanoid-Human’ marriages and later they had adopted Maitreyi, a human girl child.

Anya’s mortal life had morphed into immortal memories for him.

Thanks Mayuri. It’s my wishful thinking that though the human race will advance in all spheres of life in future, the forte of emotions which is a characteristics of Human race will continue to be the core of existence.
