Gone are the days, I thought the other day. I was reminiscing the growing up days when my father used to make me and my elder brother read English daily every day. In those days, the news really used to be stale, for the paper used to arrive in our city, day old. In those days, I used to wonder how it would be to read the fresh newspaper. Those were the days of Doordarshan and the satellite channels mushroomed much later.

My wish came true, as I stepped out of my cosy town to the bigger city to pursue engineering. The library of my college had the fresh copy of English daily on stands every day. Reaching early to library from the hostel to read the newspaper became the norm of the day. News and paper both, felt crisp and smelt fresh. On slow yet steady note, days evolved gradually, towards constructive developments. So did the news. Reading newspaper thus used to be the best start of the day.

Cut to present.

I now surf news channels, three times a day. One can call me ‘news addict’ as the news these days have high voltage drama, full of twists and turns. Unfortunately, they leave a sour taste in mind. Amidst scrolling, flashing advertisements, heated debates, “news” has either been pushed to corner or is been trivialised. The breaking news always carries some gory story, depressing picture or that of one-upmanship. Mind then craves for the good news than the breaking news.

Newspapers are cut from the same cloth.

I wonder where the good news, the news that are heartening, have gone hiding? Is it that there isn’t anything good happening across the prodigious world? Probably the good news now-a-day has no takers. Though high on lifting up the spirits, good news hardly has any “gossip” or “conspiracy theory” content or “mystery shrouding” it. Lack of juicy gossip and delectable debate, the good news fails to attain the stardom of chewing gum.

Billions of minds are constantly bombarded with the news that make one grow sick of the happenings around. They portray bleak picture of the world, dampen the spirit, instil fear and sow the seeds of the hatred in the young and impressionable minds. Is it not in a way responsible for the increased rate of violence, intolerance, innumerable mental disorders and highly polarized society?

Why is the newspaper designed this way? Why are the news channel not highlighting the good news first? Someone really needs to design a better newspaper, news channels.

No wonder, I feel gone are the days. The optimist inside me hasn’t died yet. It does feel weak sometimes but is tenacious and bounces back at the slightest ray of hope! The ray of hope is my wish of having a law enforced, mandating every news channel/ newspaper to report the good news of the hour/ day first in detail with only exception of emergency situations and then moving on to its money churning, TRP (circulation) boosting news!

Can it be? Yes, it can!

In the age of high TRP’s people seldom care about news. It is all about creating a sensational breaking news without much research. News are more like daily soaps nowadays.

Thanks for sharing this post. Have a good day.
