Startled by rasping knock at the door, he looked up from lap-top, but not before checking bottom right corner for time, which displayed 1am. Darting eyes in darkness that had blanketed every inch of room, with thoughts stuck deep in work, it took him several seconds to comprehend the situation.

The Knock

Knocking compounded with every passing second. A bolt of lightning made a brief appearance in the piece of sky that window could hold in its frame. It had been raining incessantly since afternoon.

Working from comforts of bedroom of villa, he hadn’t bothered about unremitting downpour. Suddenly now, he took cognizance of thumping sound of wind that was slapping window. Pitch darkness, courtesy snapped electric line and swooshing clangor added to eeriness.

Gathering courage that lay scattered in bits and pieces in every part of his body, he headed for hallway. Knocking now was outpaced by thumping heartbeats. Shaking his head to ward of spectral thoughts, he shouted, “Who’s it?” Freakish silence hung heavily, having no answer; but left his forehead with glistening sweat beads for company.

Taking a long, deep breath he opened door. A gush of cold wind lapped his face with splash of water droplets.

Here he stood facing a huge branch of tree, that had come undone from trunk, like a fallen soldier, after a tussle with gusty wind. Not happy with slaying the branch, the wind was still banging the branch on door, making it kick the conscious out of his spirit!
